Nine frame evaluation of out horror opening
In our opening shot we used a close up shot of a garden to show some normality within our horror opening. This shot was aimed to not be too distracting as it is used as a background for our institutions and title's. In this shot we can see clearly the frost that has coated the plant, this frost sets a uncomfortable feel about the following few minutes as it makes audiences see the crisp weather that is featured in this horror. From this audiences can decipher what season this horror is set and can understand that it is not a warm welcoming setting but instead a cold uncomfortable one which we feel is more appropriate for a horror as its unsettling for audiences. This shot also establishes part of where the location for our production can be however vague it may be, this is elaborated on in the next few shots in this sequence which used inventive and creative camera angles to give audiences small glimpses of the setting. The font we used for our opening credits is somewhat simple however is stylised in a professional manner, we had the colour of our text white as it seemed appropriate due to the genre being paranormal.Another reason we chose this font is due to our research into horror film's such as Paranormal activity and Childsplay both of which used a plain and simple font for many of there title cards and credits. For lighting in this shot we used natural lighting so that the shot appeared more immersive, in order to do this we had to film during the right weather and time to make sure the lighting was effective as it could of been.
This following shot is an establishing shot of the house so that audiences can get a feel for where this opening is going to take place and its setting. Along with this shot we included some more institutions and titles to appear in the bottom of the screen and generally in places that make it visible but that will not take away from the footage. In this shot we again get more evidence to suggest the time of season that this film was set due to the dull gray skies that lurk over the house. Due to the low angle of the shot the house appears much more sinister and menacing as it looms over the camera making audiences feel small and more insecure.Again for this shot we used natural lighting, an added bonus for us using the daytime to film was the gloomy effect of the light at the time which we filmed, this effect added to the gloomy feel we were trying to create for our horror. This shot only lasted a few seconds much like every other shot in this opening sequence, this is so that these scenes don't last to long but long enough for our audience to take in all the necessary information from these scenes.
This shot of an old photo of our protagonist is used to show a darker past to this protagonist and it is within this scene we really begin to see the more haunting and darker tone for our opening as the camera slowly pans away from the photo revealing news paper clippings of murders that appear to surround this character with such titles as "girl orphaned after parents murdered". We feel this scene really sets the tone for the scenes to come later on as well as surrounding our protagonist with an aura of mystery and many questions that audiences would like to have answered in the rest of the film, which we feel is good as it grips audiences and keeps them watching to find closure and answers for there questions. This scene is very bright in terms of lighting, this gives it the effect that it is either a memory or a flashback which either of these works with what this shot is trying to convey, what also helps with this image is how everything within this shot appears black and white which give a older look as if it was not shot during present day.
This shot introduces the girl from the picture in the opening title screens grown up and appears a bit more mature in the face however still young enough to retain childhood innocence. This scene features this girl getting tucked into bed by her foster parents, this is a useful scene as it shows the calm in our horror and how the everyday family life is, this is important as without this people would not know what has changed throughout our horror or understand whether the problems have been resolved. As well as what I previously stated this shot reveals more members of our cast to the audience so that people can see who is within the film as well as start building bonds with said characters as this grips audiences more as they need people to root for. The camera is situated above the protagonists head looking down to empathises her venerability and make her seem more innocent and harmless. The lighting in this shot is predominantly coming from the landing outside the room behind the camera, this is effective was do not see the light so that we don't get any glimmers on the camera that may effect the footage and because this light dimly lights the room making it suitable for how we want this room lit as total darkness would make the footage black but too much light would remove the illusion of this scene being set during night time.We also closed the blinds in this room to remove any natural light that may flood the room and waited until the light out side had also dimmed. Also during this scene the eery horror soundtrack that accompanied the opening shots fades to remove any horror aspects from this scene as to have it playing throughout the entire opening would be too much and would loose its effect.
The shot of the clock is used to show a passage of time as well as establish the time in the this scene and the scenes to follow. The time we chose to feature in this scene is midnight as we feel that is a signature time period in the horror genre and also helps set the horror feel about these scenes. The chamber is angled up to look at the clock to appear almost as if it is from the point of view of the young girl in the bed. It is from this scene on wards we hear a non diagetic soundtrack feature in our production, this soundtrack compliments the accompanying scenes well only helping create suspense and anticipation for the audience but being over whelming. The light in this shot is similar to the previous shot however we need to add more light sources so that the clock was clearly readable for the audience as without this it would be hard for the audience to establish what time it actually is, to do this we turned on a lamp on the other side of the room and angled it toward the clock face but not directly at it as this made it clear and would be clearly visable that a lamp was pointed towards it, to work round this she shone the light just underneath the clock face.
This scene is the first true glimpse into the horror nature of our opening as it is hear we see things take a turn for the worst with visuals of a graphic nature. Although this scene is a dream sequence, it implies that something horrific relating to this event may take place later on in this film almost as if this dream is foreshadowing future events. We made this scene appear more like a nightmare through use of effects such as grain and black and white as well as quick jump cuts that unsettle audiences. I feel that this scene is one of the most important scenes in our opening two minutes as is reveals the horror elements to our opening as well as builds more narrative for the story as well as quests from audiences. We used a knife in this scene as well as fake blood as our props as we felt this would help visually create the disturbing dream that our protagonist is having as both of these things are iconic throughout the horror genre. The lighting in this scene is effective as it is very overwhelming which the opposite compared to the lighting used in the other scenes of the opening, this helps give the feel of this sequence being different due to the dramatic change in lighting. The way the killer is dressed in this scene gives a sense of mystery as he is wearing all black and his identity is concealed from the audience leaving them wanting to know who he is and if he has any further relevance to the plot. The people who get murdered in this scene by the killer bare similar resemblance to Katy parents found in the begin of the opening as both they couple appear as young adults which could reveal some foreshadowing to the audience.
In this shot we can see our protagonist entering the parents, what stands out about this shot is the use of lighting within the shot, when the door is opened we can see the light enter the room with the protagonist, what also made the light in this scene effective would be the angle the camera was positioned in. The camera was situated at a low angle revealing only the protagonists feet and the floor they work on, this worked well with the lighting because it focused on a small area of the shot and made the contrast between light and dark more obvious. This shot also may unnerve audiences for the same reasons masks do as we cannot see the expression of the person in the shot and their face is hidden from us so we can not see their motives or how there feeling leaving audiences unprepared for whatever follows. The soundtrack reemerges in this scene and only helps create a nightmarish vision for our audiences as it like the scenes is unnerving and eery.
The final shot of footage I chose is of the scene right before the title of our film features. This shot is a low angle shot from the perspective of the parents in there bed looking towards the protagonist. What I feel works well in this shot is how the shadows mask out the girls facial features also dehumanizing her and making her look more mysterious as she appears as a silhouette before her parents. What I feel makes this shot one of the scariest in our horror movie opening is how helpless and vulnerable the parents are in this shot as they are unaware of any danger's, this particular shot creates this perfectly as it is a lower angle looking up towards Katy making her seem more menacing and overpowering, this makes it seem like the parents have no way of defending themselves, on top of this what I also feel makes this shot one of these scariest is that we all have to sleep and this scene reveals how vulnerable you are when you do eventually fall asleep.
This scene in particular contains all the relevant codes and conventions that make a good horror production as it takes inspiration fro such horror films as "Nightmare on elm street" and "Amityville" horror. From here our music begins to intensify building up to the following scenes.

At the end of our horror opening we added the films title to conclude what the audiences have seen. This title is on its own title card and made so that it stands out and catches the eye of its viewers, this is so that audiences are reminded of what they have just seen and will relate that production to the name. The font we used is a bold white ariel font as we felt it fit the production as is commonly used throughout multiple horror productions, whats effective about this text in particular is its simplicity and how it doesn't screen horror keeping the films theme hidden. This shot only lasts a few seconds as we feel only a few seconds are needed for audiences to gather what they need from this scene. With this scene we hear the intense music abruptly stop leading audiences wondering as to what happens next.
How does your product represent particular social groups
We have represented our protagonist as a young girl attracting female audiences as by having a female as our protagonist but not showing her in a sexual manner we are both going against archetypes and the maze gaze which is common place within the horror genre, but instead making her appeal more to female audiences as we created her as real as possible so that woman can relate to her along with this we feel we'll attract a young female audience due to how this particular audience can relate to our protagonist.
We also show our protagonist to be struggling with mental health issues and being haunted by demons of her past which play on her mind. Through creating her like this we feel that we can create more awareness and sympathy for mental illness and reveal how severe it can actually be. By showing her progression deeper and deeper into insanity because of her mental issues we feel we can show how vulnerable and alone victims of such illness can feel.
In our opening our protagonist is not the hero which again goes against traditional conventions for horror, our protagonist is instead created to be misunderstood as she is portrayed as a villain but also as a victim too, similar to that of films like "Wolfman" where the main villain is also a victim seeking help. This also goes against traditional horror as it is not so black and white when it comes to the villains and heroes within our production.
Other victims in our horror production would be the foster parents of our disturb protagonist 'Katy' the parents are showed to be vulnerable in a sense as they are unaware of the evil that is consuming there child and the danger that are in, this is shown towards the end of our opening where Katy is looming over her sleeping parents bed in a disturbed state.

Our character's
The parents of Katy in our horror production are dressed how we would expect a young couple to be dressed, this is so that they fit the role of young parents better in our production an example of this would be how the farther is seen wearing slim fitting jeans and the mother also wearing slim fitting clothes,we did this so we could reach out to a broader audience as they are both first time parents and both young, this means that we can attract the attention of both young couples and existing families with children at the same time. The physical appearance of both parents is young also keeping to there roles as young parents, we can see this through how the dad has a styled hair cut and facial hair which is more typical for a younger man than apposed to an older man.The mother also appears young through the lack of wrinkles and age on her face, we can also tell from her hair much like the fathers it has a young style to it as we can see that is put in a style more commonly found in a younger lady.
We created these parents to be loving as shown through both how they physically address there daughter and verbally. Examples of how they physically address there daughter would be how the mother is seen playing with her daughter's hair in a comforting manner while smiling down at her and at the same time we can see the farther coming over to took there daughter into bed and like the mother does it with a warming smile on his face. Both the parents say goodnight to there daughter before leaving the room, this is a good example of how loving they are due to how Katy appears as a young teen and most parents would stop tucking there daughter into bed at that age but this shows how attached these parents are to there foster daughter. The reason we made the parents to be like this is so that audiences feel sympathy for these parents throughout the film as they can see that there good people with no bad intentions but have still ended up in a terrible situation, this sympathy that we created towards the parents also helps portray them as the victims in our opening.

Katy the daughter of the foster parents is seen wearing pajamas throughout our opening which we thought would help show how she is a regular young girl, this would help attract a young female audience to our production as they feel they can relate somewhat to the protagonist. Katy's physical appears is very young as she has a rounded and plump face which is typically expected within young children, we can also see how she isn't wearing any make up and does not have hair styled in any particular way again typical of young girls, this is so that audiences can get the illusion of her being innocence as children are generally seen this way, this is effective for horror as if we make the innocent child the villain in this film it throws audiences off and leaves them vulnerable as they are unsure which character to trust. This innocence also helps audiences feel sympathy for the Katy and her mental illness as she is just a young girl and does not full understand what it is going on with her, especially if she is seen witnessing her own parents death at such a young age as these are scenes that people of any age would never want to see especially at such a young age.
Katy is not heard speaking throughout the entirety of the opening, I think this is effective as it might show how insecure and lonely she feels even when she surrounded by her loving parents, this makes audiences wonder what is going on within Katy that she feels she cant even tell the closest people in her life and how dark this inner demon is.After her nightmarish memory consumes her it seems that is possessed of sorts as she no longer acts like a normal person as all her movements are basic and frigged almost as if she is in a dazed state, this makes audiences feel as if Katy isn't aware of what she actually doing building more sympathy for her even though she is the villain of this horror.

Representations to existing horror characters
One character I have already made a comparison too earlier on would be 'The Wolfman' as unlikely as this character might seem in terms of how similar he is to our protagonist I feel this is good comparison in terms of similarities. This comparison is due to how both 'The Wolfman' and Katy are miss understood and a monsters against there own will, this is present as 'the Wolfman' changes into a werewolf at night with no control over what he does and he tries to seek isolation from people in fear of hurting them. This is similar to Katy as like the 'The Wolfman' Katy has no control over when she becomes a monster nor did she choose to be a monster in the first place, she also has no control of what she does when she becomes this monster as she enters a possessed state completely unaware of what she is doing, infact she has no idea that she even is a monster throughout the duration of our production. Another similarity is that both of these characters end up hurting loved ones and those closest to them and would never do such a thing consciously. Both Katy and 'The Wolfman' appear normal during the day with no give away that they are monsters physically but both these characters appear somewhat unstable mentally as they are both very reserved and in a world of their own.
We aimed to create a character like this as it makes our film less black and white for audience as there is no real villain and no real hero, this works well as we desired to make our production a physiological horror and we feel it is a lot more effective if archetypes appear more cloudy and less obvious as it makes audiences think.
Another similar existing character would be Esther from the film Orphan, this due to how both these character are seen as young girls and how both girls are orphaned. Both these characters have a dark history with former parents be it foster or birth parents. Both Katy and Esther are a danger to who ever is around them this usually being loved ones and those closest to them.Another similarity would be how both these characters are mentally ill however where as Esther is aware of her illness and makes no attempt to stop it our character Katy has no idea of the monster that she becomes and means no harm to her loved ones and those around her.

What kind of media institution might distribute our media product
One distribution we had in mind to distribute our media product was 'Studio Canal'.The reason we thought of this company to distribute our product would be for a number of reasons, one of which would be how they are based in France but also own multiple other distribution companies for example Optimum Releasing in Britain and Kinowelt in Germany, this would mean if they are distributing our film it would be to a more European audience making the film reach a larger audience but still retaining some familiarity to its fans on top of this would be how Studiocanal has had multiple partnerships and collaborations with many other distribution company's around the world such as Lionsgate which is a respected distribution company itself allowing us to reach a global audience if we needed too.Another reason for choosing Studiocanal for one our distributing companies would be there multiple previous successes with other films such as Terminator 2 judgement day, but more important would be there successes with such horror films as The Evil Dead 2 and Close encounters of third kind, we feel that they would be perfect due to how the close encounters of a third kind was a physiological film and was distributed well around the world by this company.Studiocanal has also worked with both major institution such as Warner Brothers and independent institutions making them very versatile in terms with how they distribute films and what scale they do so.
Other production companies we would use would be Blumhouse and Hammer for funding our product, this is due to both there previous successes with independent films such as Paranormal Activity and Sinister both of which did very well at the box office and afterwords once the film was released on dvd, online streaming and many other media platforms.

Who would be our audience for our media product
The audience for our media product is mainly younger adults and teens however we feel we kept our audience very broad and did not leave any particular group out so that anyone could watch and enjoy our production. However we created a questionnaire to help us see who is most likely too see our film and based our target audience of that questionnaire for example we found that paranormal was the most popular sub genre of horror so intended to create a paranormal production in order to have a larger target audience, we also included elements of many other popular sub genres so that we could attract other audiences, an example would be slashers so we incorporated some more horrific and gore scenes that would appeal to fans of that genre we also found that physiological horror was also popular so implemented elements of physiological horror into our production also.
We also considered our target audience in terms of our horror productions setting, in the end we felt we would attract a more loyal fan base by setting it in a typical suburban setting as our target audiences could relate to this setting more than other settings we originally had in mind. This was more directly shown in the settings with the house as Katy's room appears as a normal teen age girls room with many props that could be found throughout many girls rooms such as tv's, mirrors, make up ect.
Another example would be how the house appears more working and middle class which could attract audiences of that class to come see our production as these classes make up most of the UK.
When creating our characters for this production we took into account our target audiences and modeled them after them, as we found that younger audiences are more likely to go see horror films we molded are characters after them which gave us a young teenage girl as the protagonist with a young couple looking after her, this is so that audiences can relate to these characters, much like our locations we also made these characters appear more working and middle class in how they looked as we wanted them to appear real as if would could meet them out and about in the real world. Our characters were also played by people we felt would attract our desired audience this would be why all the character in our production are British so that we can attract a more local audience within our film due to a lack of British productions in this genre of horror as it usually dominated by wealth Americana characters.Through uses of British locations and actors we feel we can represent British culture throughout our production in turn drawing in more fans, on top of this this would give us more genres to feature in as we would feature in horror, physiological and British films which would make our film more versatile and again attract a larger audience.
With all this in mind we aimed our production to fit the age rating of 15 by the BBFC as this would hit our target audience perfectly as it would allow us to show enough mature content within our film to still attract more mature audiences and fans of genres such as slasher but at the same time not an excessive amount that would leave out a younger audience. Our inspiration for why we feel that this is the perfect age group would be recent cinema and how many block buster film have set there age ratings lower to reach a broader audience an example of this in horror would be the film Orphan.

How did we attract our audience
For this section of the evaluation we analysed our opening using Youtube annotations too show how our production attracts our desired audiences, how particular aspects of the opening appeal to them and how this may be similar to other openings that we previously studied. We have looked at multiple other openings from successful horror movies such as Seven and Texas chainsaw massacre to help us create our opening, using similar codes and conventions as the template for our own Horror production. Some of these conventions we used to attract our audience but others we challenged to make our production feel more original rather than just being a typical generic Horror film that audiences feel they have already seen. While creating our Horror production we had our Target Audience in mind and catered our production around them as to gain there attention. Our Target Audience is teens with a secondary audience being young adults.
What have I learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product
To film our media product we used a cannon camcorder provided by the school and used a partner camera tripod also provided by the school to stabilize our camera throughout our shoots however in some cases we held the camera free hand so that we could achieve some better angles which we learnt as a result of completing our preliminary task, we later used a stabilization effect within our editing software so that the footage wasn't so shaking and was near enough smooth.Once our footage was filmed we later imported it onto a able mac within school where we used imovie as our editing software, we used imovie due to our familiarity with it having previously used to to edit our preliminary task.Using knowledge we had gained from camera angles and effects we were able have a wide range of creative and diverse footage to edit from, examples of these shot are shot reverse shot, abiding by the 180 degree rule, low angle shot to make things appear bigger and more ominous as well as a high angle shot to make this appear smaller and more vulnerable.
We used Photoshop to create our company's logo as Laura a member of our group explained how she both had access and knowledge of how to use it, so as a group we came up with a suitable idea that would fit our genre for our institution to look like and allowed Laura to recreate this on Photoshop.
Having previously studied media in GCSE I was able to carry over some helpful information into our production mainly use of camera tricks and techniques as well some some basic knowledge of institutions and companies involved in the film business, however I have learnt a lot more during the course of our media product and feel a lot more comfortable with information regarding both production of a film and the multiple stages that both go into and follow a film once it has been created.

Looking back at your preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product
I feel that I learnt many new camera tricks and techniques since creating the preliminary task such as the effectiveness of camera angles and shots, an example of this would be how we used a low angle shot to portray Katy in our opening as more intimidating, such tricks were not used in the preliminary task which looking back could of been used to great effect in the many of its scenes but we only stuck to the three techniques shown to us at the start which were shot reverse shot, match on action and the 180 degree rule.
We have also learnt a lot more about the importance of lighting within our productions since our first preliminary task as when we made our first video not much attention was put towards the lighting and we just used the light on location however in our horror opening you can clearly see how the use of lighting has dramatically changed an example would be the scene where Katy opens her parents door and we see the contrast between the beam of light and the darkness of the room, again looking back I feel that improvements to the lighting in our preliminary task would of made it look a lot more effective especially within the interrogation scene as it looks pretty bland and dull.On top of this I feel we have became much more comfortable with the equipment than we were first were when it came to making the preliminary task, this is most clear when using iMovie for our editing as any editing within the preliminary task was very basic and not used to its full potential however within our horror opening we used a whole range of different effects such as filters, stabilization and different cut techniques to bring our horror to life.
